Moses, in a moment of passion.jpg

A Marvelous Order

A multimedia opera about Robert Moses, Jane Jacobs and their battle over the future of New York City

Music by Judd Greenstein
Libretto by Tracy K. Smith, US Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner
Direction
Multi-channel Animation by Joshua Frankel

The opera, in two acts, both celebrates the city and the qualities that make it alive and livable – what Jacobs called “the ballet of the street”; and frames the story’s conflict, implicitly, as a love triangle in which Moses and Jacobs vie for the affections of the city.

Through music, poetry, dance and animation, the opera treats titanic figures as human beings driven by emotions.

A MARVELOUS ORDER pushes traditional opera boundaries by complicating its usual composer-led hierarchy. It forgoes the common constraints of opera such as the “bel canto”; It employs amplification, places multi-channel animation throughout, embeds pre-recorded vocalists in animation; and it inverts the female-heroine-victim trope (too common in opera) with Jane Jacobs. It is a visual and literary marvel, treating text, animation and music as equals in the telling of the story.

The production is expected to premiere in 2020 at a venue soon to be announced. It is also under consideration by multiple international cities -- from Amsterdam to Gothenburg to Chicago -- that recognize the universality of its story.
